WHY RED?
Views of the landscape around my home in Somerset
In these series of landscapes I wanted to draw something I felt beautiful yet placed in a different light. These landscapes avoid local colour and in its place offer various tones and modulations of red. Using colour in this way sets a mood. Red is a primary colour and has associations that are very different then the balanced greens so prevalent in most landscapes. Often red is associated with alarm, sacrifice, heat and injury- words that come to my mind as I walk through this beautiful land. If there is a mood created by this work it is one perhaps of foreboding, reflection or longing. I have avoided introducing people; the scenes seem to be set in silence without signs of habitation or distraction.
